The other day a customer said to me “I believe in Clover.” And that’s been rattling around in my head. I do too. And I hope you do as well. And I feel sometimes that Clover is this audacious project that had no reason to succeed. The first moments we had 200 people in line for the truck at MIT still feel impossible and electric when I think about it nearly 15 years later. We’re trying to create a new food system, a new food culture, one that’s both more delicious and has a much lower carbon footprint. We want to work with you and others to de-carbonize eating.
I’ve recently asked somebody who believes in Clover as much as I do to step into the CEO role. Julia Wrin Piper has been Clover’s COO for the past 18 months and will take over running the company day-to-day. I’ll be shifting my efforts to provide support for Julia and the team, work on growth opportunities, and pursue partnerships that will amplify Clover’s mission. I’ll remain a member of the Board of Directors and active as an advisor and mentor. Clover is facing a potent mix of opportunity and challenge right now and I know Julia is exactly the right person to lead the team through these twists and turns.
Some of you have met Julia in our restaurants. And some of you may have gotten to know her better last year when the Boston Globe ran a really nice feature on her last year. Julia was a Clover fan and customer and overall booster long before she joined our team. Julia has a science background (it’s not the only reason we get along, but it’s pretty awesome). Julia is one to present direction with a calm but resolute tone, supported by carefully listening to all points of view. It’s a style that’s at home at Clover. Our successes over the years has been the result of customers, employees, suppliers, giving of themselves to create something new and beautiful.
I’m so excited for you all to get to know Julia better as we work on Clover’s next steps.
