My favorite time of the year is right now.
I love autumn for all of the smells, tastes and sights that happen in New England. Get ready for this stuff to start showing up on the menu. Pumpkins, winter squash, sweet potatoes, sage, fall crop parsnips (as opposed to spring-dug), pears, apples, turnips, rutabagas. This is also the season for the potato harvest. I heard that lots of school kids in Maine used to get October vacation to help family farms with potatoes, anybody know if this is still true?
October is also when we start thinking about winter spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger and cloves.
The little pumpkins in the picture? We roasted them up and made pumpkin hazelnut muffins, which we ran on the trucks early this week. If you had some, let us know what you thought.
