We’re pioneering a new Clover tradition: Whoopie Fridays. I found out a couple of weeks ago while in Maine that Whoopie Pies are a New England invention. Did you know that? The stories about the name are odd, and I’m not sure I believe them. But the regional nature of this funny cookie seems pretty solid. Having grown up in New England I thought these were everywhere, I didn’t realize they were something particularly New England. And to be honest, I never really loved them. That’s going to change.
Driving through Northern Maine you can find pick-up trucks parked on the side of the road with signs out saying: “Whoopie Pies.” Sort of like a dessert version of the lobster pick-ups that park on the side of the road (a phenomenon I love). Captures some of our aspirations: something tasty, unpredictable, a happy surprise, cheap, and when they’re out, they’re out.
So, on FridaysWe’re going to make whoopie pies at the restaurant. Vincenzo made this recipe, adapting our cupcake base recipe and a cream-cheese filling. Like our cupcakes, they were really tasty, and a bit ugly (sorry Enzo, but it’s true). Expect some more iterations as we sort this one out.
